Today is Glenn Yarbrough’s birthday. He turned 83.

In 1957, he was one of the first singers to record the traditional ”The House of the Rising Sun” for Elektra Records.

“There is a pub in Leatherhead they call the Rising Sun”..big sprawling place it was, but no place for kids in the car clutching the traditional bottle of coke and a bag of crisps.

    Kat,
His voice is amazing. But Ronnie Gilbert recorded (with Fred Hellerman playing a dynamite guitar backing) what I think of as the definitive version a couple of years earlier. It had also been recorded in the 30s and 40s in a few different versions.

      Mark,
I thought I had played that but I haven’t on this Coffee. It sounded familiar. Now I’ll see what I can do about finding it.

      Thanks!

Glenn Yarbrough was the reason I started playing guitar when I was 11. My sister had his albums and I’d sneak play them while she was gone. One of the first songs I ever performed was “Baby The Rain Must Fall”. God Bless him.

      Beto,
That is my favorite song of his. The only reason I didn’t play it is because I have played it here before.

He was one of my early folk singer loves!
