You’re right about those Christmas specials. I remember him and his brothers singing together and his parents showing up at the end of the early shows.

I too can never forget the SNL tag line and the film in the background of the skier going down.

it was the kitchyness of the whole deal that i enjoyed about the xmas specials. then of course, later on, the snl skit about
‘another skier accidentally shot by claudine longet’ tag line
got stuck in my head….

Katmah, please note that it wasnt just a tally, it was a REMARKABLE tally including but not limited to a Knieval AND a Kennedy. Not sure if it meant that one of his dates could jump bridges and stuff

My Dear Hedley,
That first marriage with Claudine was strange. She was so wispy, almost ethereal, which didn’t fit in with him at all.

I never knew about his “tally of attractive girlfriends” though I did know he was close to Ethel.

Those Christmas sweaters were gaudy and ugly and perfect!

Love this section from the Daily Telegraph obituary :

“Although he enjoyed a reputation as the acme of clean-cut American homeliness, and possessed a voice that was compared to warm chocolate sauce, Williams also featured regularly in gossip columns after the failure of his first marriage on account of his remarkable tally of attractive girlfriends.

They ranged from unknown British starlets through to the sister of Evil Knievel and Ethel Kennedy, widow of the assassinated American Senator Robert Kennedy, a close friend. In 1968 Williams had sung at Kennedy’s funeral . Such was his notoriety that in 1973, two years after his last television spectacular had been aired in Britain, Williams complained of being blackballed by the BBC because of his private life.”
